Beginning with a simple piercing in the ear, different sized gauge plugs are then placed in the earlobes to stretch them over extended periods of time. This excessive stretching distorts the tissue of the earlobes, eventually leaving them with a hole that is stretched out permanently.

Repairing Gauged Earlobes
Although repairing gauged earlobes is a specialized process, it can typically be done in less than an hour. The procedure itself is performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. After an incision is made that extends from the bottom of the stretched hole to the outer edge, surface tissue inside of the gauged earlobe is removed. To close the hole, the earlobe tissue is moved forward and closed with sutures.
Recovery and Results
Patients can return to work immediately following surgery as there is no downtime associated with earlobe repair. There is little to no pain during your recovery and any sensitivity you may feel can be alleviated with an over-the-counter medication. You will be prescribed an antibiotic to protect you from infection, and sutures will be removed after five to seven days. No earrings should be worn for six weeks following your surgery. The incisions will fade as they heal, and the remaining scars will be very inconspicuous. This procedure produces a great improvement to the appearance of the ears and patients are usually very happy with their results.
